Was it a sheer coincidence or my destiny?
You will agree with me that anything which is visually appealing will ever win the hearts of viewers any time. Humans love and appreciate artistic work which are rich in aesthetics. This is a logic used by many businesses today and going with the current trends, animations are now key in adding artistic value in many fields with the basic intention of luring people to buy products and services; from TV commercials to movies, 3D technology is something that every graphic designer should embrace.
I’m Luke. My love for graphic design started while I was a little kid who loved watching cartoons and playing video games. What amazed and really charmed me about cartoons is the creativity which goes to make them more appealing; giving the characters life and the audience something to marvel about.
Although I not talented in drawing or anything to do with sketching, I always felt that I was destined to be a great designer. Therefore while in high school, I started playing with various programs which could animate simple characters and render the work in short video clips.
My stupid move.
One day I decide to create an animated figure of our head teacher. I did this so that I could get back at him because of a severe punishment that he had meted on me for sneaking out of school. Angry at him, I took about three weeks working on the caricature of him and tried all the best to make it perfect.
Using a picture of him from the school magazine, I created an animation of him as a cattle herder and when I was certain that all was done to my level best, I sneaked the video clip into our school’s computer lab and posted it there. I then made it to play as a screen saver when the computer was idle and left.
Within a few hours the clip had gone viral and it was everyone’s talk at the school. When he heard about it, the head went to check it. I don’t know why but instead of getting mad he was really excited by the clip. According to him he found it amazing and really wanted to know whose work it was. Of course there was no way that I could come forward and claim that I did.
Anyway one way or the other, all fingers pointed at me because my classmates knew my capabilities when working with animations and then my remorse for the head said it all.
I was called to the administration block after two days and to my astonishment, my dad was there together with the head and two other gentlemen. At first I thought things had gone awry. But that was not the case. The head was willing to sponsor me take some classes on graphic designing and had called my dad to talk about it and he was so happy about it.
I attended the evening course for 6 months and really improved my skills. I always marvel at what I did to deserve that. My ill intentions had turned to be a blessing.
I must agree that when I started working with various programs and tools, my work was really awful. The tools then had limited capabilities for an amateur to produce even 2D animated work. Even when I succeeded at creating simple 2D characters, still I had a lot of difficulties adding after effects or integrating my work with flash for a smooth video processing and productions.
However, much has changed and today anybody can create or even sculpt 3D characters with much ease and do all. Most of the platform and engines available online for designing animations and other graphic have been improved a lot and been integrated with several features which aid in the development of both 2D and 3D.
